Singing Day

On Monday 17th October, The Dorcan Academy opened their doors to five other secondary schools in Swindon for a singing day. Led by the vocal experts Val Weston, Janice and Jess Tompson, students learned a variety of musical theatre pieces throughout the day culminating in a mass performance at the end. Thanks to Miss Durston, our fabulous Head of Music for organising it so meticulously.

Ex Student wins Gold

We are very proud that one of our former students, Mali Easton was the only female to be selected to play for England in the International Inline Skater Hockey Federation’s Under 19s European Cup. The team entered as the underdogs, but by the end of Saturday, they had won all their games and their place in the gold medal match had been secured.  They faced 15 times champions Germany in the final and beat them 7-4.   This gold for Mali follows the Silver that she won at the World Championships in Turkey in July of this year when playing for the GB Under 18 Women’s Ice Hockey Team.

Mali has had an incredible year and all of us at The Dorcan Academy are extremely proud of her.

The Community Action Group

The Community Action Group have got off to a flying start this academic year.  In addition to establishing links with other local groups, they have already completed their first litter pick along the paths that run along the school’s perimeter and held a bake sale.  By selling cakes to hungry teachers at break time they raised over £20 which will be donated to the Oak and Furrows animal rescue centre.

BBC ‘Share Your Story’ Event at The Dorcan Academy

BBC ‘Share Your Story’

Students in Years 7 – 10 were lucky enough to take part in the BBC’s ‘Share Your Story’ event today. Hosted by a former Blue Peter presenter, students listened to two inspiring stories from current BBC employees. Hannah-Elisabeth Ricketts, Internal Communications and Senior Advisor at the BBC, shared her moving story with students about overcoming the challenges of being visually impaired. Thom Hanson, an assistant producer at the BBC, told students about his career journey and the benefits of taking risks and learning from mistakes. Our students asked poignant, thoughtful questions of both presenters, and were heralded as ‘the best school in Swindon’ by the visiting BBC team!

This event celebrated 100 years of sharing stories at the BBC. As part of this celebration, students have been invited to enter the Young Reporter competition, to encourage them to find their voice and share their story. Science fun morning 2022

On Saturday 1st October we had the pleasure of hosting Year 6 students and their families for our fun science morning.

A great time was had by all witnessing some science ‘magic’ demonstrations in our main hall, followed by cola and mentos ‘bombs’ in the courtyard, then on to our laboratories to investigate and identify the mystery chemicals and build a working lighthouse which the children were able to take home as a souvenir.

The morning finished with coffee and cupcakes in the library hosted by our SLT team.

Many more events are planned for Year 6 over the coming months. Next, Year 6 will be invited for an exclusive viewing of our Christmas performance.
