Women in STEM day

On 16 February, The Dorcan Academy hosted a primary and secondary Women in STEM event. This was run by a team of undergraduates from RWE: a global company with offices in Swindon, that generate and trade in the energy sector. Students from Y5 to Y9 enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about how wind turbines are developed and how they are used in our community. Students designed, budgeted, created, and improved their own model turbines, transferring enough energy to power the lights in our model houses. Lots of smiles were seen and many prizes won, from ‘Best Voltage Output’ to ‘Most Creative Design’. We are so proud of how our students rose to the occasion.

Y10 and Y11 girls with a particular interest in following a STEM career were able to ask the undergraduates for advice on STEM careers, pathways and being a woman in an under represented industry.

A huge thank you to all the team for an amazing day.

Move to remote learning – 18 February 2022

Due to the amber and red weather warning where the Met office raises that there could be flying debris that could result in a danger to life, damage to buildings and homes as well as potential power cuts, we have taken the difficult decision to close the school tomorrow and provide work via Show my homework. A number of our key staff come from areas in the red warning zone and we need to be able to run the school safely. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. We wish you a safe and restful half term.

Dance Workshop

The Year 9 and 10 Dorcan Dancers had a blast in their workshop on Thursday with Claire and Faith from Swindon Dance. The Dorcan Dancers did us all proud and the dance teachers complimented us on our amazing students and their conduct and behaviour. Well done everyone.

Community Action

On Thursday afternoon, the Dorcan Community Action Group held their first litter pick along the pathways that surround the school.

A total of 9 students, accompanied by 3 members of staff, worked together to fill 4 bins, leaving the area in a much cleaner state.

The Group was really pleased with the result of their effort and are already talking about repeating the event next term.
