British Values Statement

At The Dorcan Academy we pride ourselves on celebrating and promoting our diverse community with its many different ethnicities and religions. We believe that students should be given the opportunity to explore the issue of diversity and understand Britain as a multi-cultural society. We provide a safe learning environment where students can raise controversial questions and concerns without fear of reprimand or ridicule and explore boundaries of what is acceptable. In doing so we stimulate an open attitude to multi-cultural and race issues that demonstrates British Values at work.

Kindness, Respect and a commitment to Do our Best are at the heart of our school ethos; in addition, we promote and teach core British values such as: Democracy; The rule of law; Individual liberty; Mutual respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths, beliefs and backgrounds.

Our aim is to:

• Create an inclusive culture, where all students are assured of their self-worth, feel that they belong and are valued for who they are
• Teach the character virtues of honesty and integrity, including the ability to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.
• Encourage students to take personal responsibility for their behaviour, and to use their strengths and abilities to make a positive difference to the lives of others within our school community as well as our local and global community.
• Promote kindness, tolerance and a deep respect towards all people within our school community and beyond, along with an appreciation of their own and other cultures
• Create a great sense of pride in being British, and gratitude for all the benefits we enjoy through being part of a democracy; and instil in our students a sense of responsibility to participate in those processes.
