Engineering

Curriculum Intent

In Engineering we aim to provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding of industry appropriate practices, aiming to prepare them for the 21st century. Learners will gain valuable knowledge of engineering disciplines, including the science and mathematics that is applied in engineering. They will understand the importance of health and safety legislation, that would ready them for industry.

This course will prepare students and give them an insight into the engineering field, ready to progress onto further education or industry.

Results

In Engineering last year, 35.4% of students achieved grades L2D* to L2M; and 54.2% achieved grades L2D* to L2P.

How we assess

V Cert Technical Awards are a suite of high-quality technical qualifications which are appropriate for Key Stage 4 learners. They are a technical alternative to GCSEs with equivalent levels of rigour and challenge. The Level 1/2 Technical Award in Engineering is designed to provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding of the applied study of good engineering practices and an understanding of working in the sector.

To be awarded Level 1/2 Technical Award in Engineering, learners are required to successfully complete 2 mandatory units. Learners must also achieve a minimum of a Level 1 pass in the internal and external assessments.

Mandatory units

Unit 01 Understanding the Engineering World (H/616/8968)

Unit 02 Skills and Techniques in Engineering (K/616/8969)

The Level 1/2 Technical Award in Engineering consists of 2 assessment components:

• external assessment – practical test. This will assess the application of knowledge and skills acquired throughout Unit 01

• internal assessment – Unit 02 is an internally assessed synoptic project and is externally quality assured by NCFE

Learners are also regularly assessed through termly cumulative assessments, Do  Now activities and retrieval practice.
