Digital Skills for Life

Curriculum Intent:  The Digital Skills for Life curriculum is designed to equip our students with the knowledge, skills and character required to thrive in an increasingly technological world. As digital innovation continues to transform the workplace, communication and society, we aim to ensure that every student is confident, capable and responsible in their use of technology.

Digital Skills for Life promotes and explicitly teaches our Dorcan values and character virtues, embedding honesty, integrity, personal responsibility and resilience within all aspects of digital learning. Students are taught to act responsibly online, to understand the moral and legal implications of their digital actions, and to demonstrate compassion and respect when engaging with others in digital spaces.

Through a structured programme in Years 7, 8, and 9, students develop foundational proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel. They learn to create professional documents, present information clearly and confidently, and analyse and interpret data effectively. These essential skills prepare students for further study, employment and active participation in a modern workforce where digital competence is fundamental.

The blend of PSHE, SMSC and Digital Skills ensures that students not only know how to use technology, but understand how to use it safely and wisely. Students explore online safety, digital footprints, cyber security, misinformation and the social and emotional impact of technology. They develop the resilience and critical thinking needed to navigate risks, challenge inappropriate content, and make informed choices in digital environments.

We recognise that in the 21st century, digital literacy is not optional — it is essential. Our intent is to develop students who are not only technologically skilled, but ethically aware, socially responsible and prepared to contribute positively to an ever-advancing technological society. Through Digital Skills for Life, we empower students to become confident digital citizens who can adapt, innovate and thrive in the world, for work, and for their own wellbeing.
