On 16 February, The Dorcan Academy hosted a primary and secondary Women in STEM event. This was run by a team of undergraduates from RWE: a global company with offices in Swindon, that generate and trade in the energy sector. Students from Y5 to Y9 enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about how wind turbines are developed and how they are used in our community. Students designed, budgeted, created, and improved their own model turbines, transferring enough energy to power the lights in our model houses. Lots of smiles were seen and many prizes won, from ‘Best Voltage Output’ to ‘Most Creative Design’. We are so proud of how our students rose to the occasion.
Y10 and Y11 girls with a particular interest in following a STEM career were able to ask the undergraduates for advice on STEM careers, pathways and being a woman in an under represented industry.
A huge thank you to all the team for an amazing day.
