The Dorcan Academy was alive with excitement last week as we welcomed Year 6 pupils from our local primary schools to experience our much-anticipated WOW Days. These special events give children a taste of life at Dorcan and this year’s programme was packed with creativity, curiosity and fun.
In Science, pupils became young chemists, investigating acids and alkalis and creating their own dazzling rainbow fizz reactions. In Design Technology, they got hands-on designing and making beautiful, personalised bookmarks, while in Art they explored fine art drawing techniques. Over in Drama, stories were brought to life through energetic acting, and in PE there were plenty of laughs as pupils impersonated animals in exciting relay races.
Our choir gave a stunning performance of Flashlight by Jessie J, filling the hall with music and smiles. Meanwhile, Mrs Murphy led a brilliant DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) session, inspiring a love for reading among our young visitors.
The day wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated teachers, support staff, prefects, kitchen team and caretakers, who all worked tirelessly to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was wonderful to see our Dorcan Values — Belonging, Purpose and Aspiration — and Virtues — Kindness, Respect, Honesty and Courage — shining through in every activity and interaction.
Feedback from our primary schools has been overwhelmingly positive:
“The children were buzzing with excitement and had an amazing time. Please extend our thanks to the excellent prefect guides, all the teachers involved and your fabulous catering team who looked after us so well. We are now looking forward to the Christmas concert!” – Heather
“The children had such a fantastic time and are so enthused about going to secondary school. They loved the lessons — parents have already told us how excited they are about science! We were so impressed by your head boy and girl and all the prefects. The atmosphere around the school was calm and the children seemed very respectful.” – Angela
We are so proud of everyone who made these days a success and can’t wait to welcome our primary students and colleagues back soon for the Christmas Concert — a highlight of our school calendar!
