Year 6 students attend WOW days at Dorcan

On Wednesday 15 September to Friday 17 September, we were very pleased to welcome our cluster schools (Covingham, Liden, Eldene, Nythe, Colebrook and Goddard Park) to participate in our WOW days to experience what the Dorcan Academy has to offer.

Upon arrival the wonderful team of senior prefects and our head boy and girl greeted the schools and then attended an assembly with Mrs Bareham to talk about Dorcan and all the amazing opportunities we offer our students.

Secondly, the student leaders took their group on a tour of the academy to show them the amazing facilities we have here at the academy. Whilst conducting the tour, the student leaders shared important facts about the academy which were useful for the prefect activity in the latter part of the day.

In addition, students attended some WOW taster lessons. They had lessons in PE, Design Technology, (where they designed and made their own bookmarks), and Science where they had the opportunity to make ‘rainbow fizz and undertake a pH testing investigation. Reports were that the Y6 students thoroughly enjoyed the activities, and it provided an insight into what learning was like at Dorcan.

The schools took part in a book hunt in the library and experienced one of our favourite times of the day, DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), followed by a question and answer session with the head students.

Finally, we want to say a massive thank you to all the staff and visitors for such a successful event and we look forward to seeing the Y6 students in 2022!

Mrs Lee, Mckenzie Long (Head Boy) and the prefect team

“The children had a wonderful experience. I must say that we were all very impressed by the way that the whole school pulled together for the event… particularly the head boy and girl and the whole student team. Please pass on our thanks to them and all of the teachers who were involved”.

Highlights of the day included:

  1. The science. They were all buzzing about it.
  2. The PE – which they really enjoyed.
  3. Having a lunch in the smaller conservatory.
  4. The tour and being able to ask questions.
  5. Seeing the past Eldene students smiling and waving to us all day – that was so nice.
  6. The calm and pleasant atmosphere around the school – the best I have ever experienced – which helped the children feel welcome and safe. We had several tummy aches and headaches this morning due to nerves – but none on the way home (although they were exhausted)!”
